The Reflections Program is a National PTA and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition. The program provides an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works.

The six competition categories include: Visual Arts, Photography, Literature, Music Composition, Dance Choreography, and Film Production.

This year’s theme was Heroes Around Me. The Reflections judges were delighted by the level of creativity and the amazing talent of MISD students in each of the six categories.

Congratulations to all the students who entered, and especially to the following who won their respective divisions and whose entries have been forwarded to the State competition.

Two exhibitions currently displaying Reflections artwork

The winners of the 2018-2019 PTA Reflections Art Competition were honored at the annual Reflections Awards Ceremony on March 4th. A selection of prize-winning visual artworks by K-12 Mercer Island students will be on display in two exhibitions taking place on Mercer Island in March and April.

The first exhibition is currently on display at Convivial Café, 3020 78th Ave SE, through April 30th. The artwork is accompanied by insightful statements pertaining to the works, following the theme Heroes Around Me. This will be a stunning exhibition that no one should miss. Special thanks to Joel Wachs for allowing the Reflections PTA Council to exhibit the student work in his beautiful gallery space.

The second exhibition is on display at the Mercer Island Library, 4400 88th Ave SE, through April 6th. There will be an opportunity to view artworks and literature based on the theme Heroes Around Me, which will be displayed in the glass cabinets and in a specially made folder of student works.

This exhibition exemplifies the talent of Mercer Island students and the Reflections PTA Council hopes, in displaying this work, it will serve to inspire other young people to embrace their creativity. Thanks to Carrie Bowman for her support in the Reflections program, and for enabling the Council to show the works at Mercer Island Library.

Details on how to enter the Reflections PTA Competition will be available again in September 2019. The 2019-2020 PTA Reflections Program’s theme is Look Within.

The Reflections program committee gives a huge thank you to all the Reflections Chairs who did such a fantastic job collecting entries, organizing the artworks, publicizing the competition, and helping at the ceremony: Jocelyn Barber, Sharon Brown, Keeley Richardson, Rosa Teorell, Nicole Cui, Joci Besecker, Bao-Tran Nguyen, Lori Hamiwka, Erin Vivion, and Annie Allender Robbins.
