Ferncroft

An archaelogical discovery in Ferncroft reminds us that long before Euro-American settlement, Mercer Island was hunting, gathering, and fishing grounds of the Coast Salish people, specifically the Duwamish tribes.

According to the book “Mercer Island: From Haunted Wilderness to Coveted Community,” which chronicles the island’s history, an arrowhead found in the Ferncroft neighborhood in 1953 was determined by the University of Washington Department of Archaeology to be 2000 years old.

Current homes in this neighborhood date back to the 1930s. It also has a mix of mid-century and Northwest contemporary homes, along with modern and traditional homes built in the 1980s and 90s, as well as more recently built waterfront estates.

The street names in this neighborhood include Ferncroft, Fernridge, Fern Brook and Fern Hollow.
