On Tuesday, August 2, the City will be hosting its eighth annual “National Night Out.” This year will mark the 33rd National Night Out event across the United States.
National Night Out is an organized crime prevention and preparedness event, and will involve over 14,000 communities from all 50 states.
Locally, there are approximately 70 cities and counties in Washington State who participate in the event, including several cities on the Eastside.
National Night Out brings neighbors together not only to heighten crime prevention awareness and family emergency preparedness, but also to strengthen neighborhood spirit and community partnerships. Neighbors get reintroduced to one another, connect names with faces, and become acquainted with City officials.
On Tuesday, August 2nd, from 5 to 8 pm, residents in neighborhoods throughout Mercer Island and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening outside with neighbors, police and fire, City officials and City staff. Many neighborhoods throughout Mercer Island will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, visits from police, fire and City officials, flashlight walks, contests and youth activities.
Additionally, an outdoor party for downtown residents will be held at the Sculpture Park (along Sunset Highway between 77th Avenue SE and 80th Avenue SE) from 5 to 8 pm. All are welcome to attend, enjoy hot dogs, and listen to live music performed by Nancy Stewart and sponsored by the Mercer Island Library. Come meet your neighbors and local police and fire fighters!
If you would like to register your neighborhood for National Night Out, please contact MIPD Officer Vickers at (206) 275-7956 or [email protected] and an officer will visit your neighborhood block party.
