This September, Mercer Island PTA Council presents: Race to Nowhere, a film screening followed by a panel discussion. Parents and high schoolers will appreciate this close-up look at the pressures faced by today’s high school students.

The film dives into topics that will resonate with many students and their families. In our achievement-obsessed culture, children are expected to exceed in academics, athletics, the arts, and community service. Interviews with young people expose the dark side of burdening students with these high expectations.

The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion with a MIHS students, parents, a youth counselor, MISD Superintendent Dr. Fred Rundle, and Mercer Island pediatrician Dr. Elizabeth Evans. Attendees can look forward to a thoughtful and productive conversation about how to listen to and support the youth in our community. The screening is free and available to the public, but attendees can consider making a donation to the film sponsor, MI Parent Edge, a PTA non-profit that coordinates community events for parents, students, and educators.
