Opened in February 2015 by former Club Emerald owner Ginny Pietila, the MI Athletic Club (MIAC) brings comprehensive, cutting-edge fitness ensconced in a beautiful, new facility to downtown Mercer Island. Mercer Island Beach Club

One of two waterfront clubs, the Mercer Island Beach Club (MIBC) is situated on the island’s southeast side and provides sweeping vistas of Lake Washington and Mount Rainier. Enjoy the view through floor-to-ceiling windows of the 2,200 square-foot fitness center equipped with cardio fitness and strength-training machines. Features also include six outdoor tennis courts and two pools (activity and competition), designed for lap swimming, diving, and family fun.

Mercer Island Country Club

While not on the water but conveniently located on the south end of the island, the Mercer Island Country Club (MICC) is considered a great year-round club and ideal for avid tennis players as the only local club with indoor as well as outdoor tennis courts. It also features an eight-lane, 25-yard pool with a spring diving board and a recently remodeled fitness and weight room, with high-tech machines, including LeMond spin bikes and TRX equipment.

Mercerwood Shore Club

This east-side club with a sprawling 500 feet of waterfront property opened a new, state-of-the-art clubhouse in July 2015. The 6,000 square-foot facility features a cardio studio, weight room, hot tub, and wading pool for toddlers as well as a 25-meter pool with a one-meter diving board and outdoor tennis courts.

A hub of Jewish life and culture on Mercer Island but welcoming to all, the Stroum Jewish Community Center (SJCC) is a fully featured health club with offerings that can’t be found at the other clubs, including a gymnasium, indoor running track, and racquetball courts. Don’t overlook . . .

Mercer Island Community & Event Center

While not exactly a club on Mercer Island, the Mercer Island Community & Event Center (MICEC) shouldn’t be overlooked as a possibility for fulfilling your fitness needs. The MICEC features a 1,450 square-foot fitness room with Techno Gym cardio equipment and free weights. The fitness room is just $3.75 – $5.25 for a daily drop-in pass or $45 – $61 for a 25-punch pass. The MICEC also features a 10,000 square-foot gymnasium that can accommodate one full-size or two half-size basketball courts (open gym times here for your pick-up games), up to three volleyball courts, and six pickleball or badminton courts. A variety of fitness classes and personal training also offered.

At 212 Health & Fitness, Jason Kaliloa teaches functional fitness using sleds, free weights, TRX systems, slam balls, kettle bells, strength bands, boxes, medicine balls, stability balls, pull up bars, dip machines and good old body weight exercises. Kaliloa’s clients range from 14 to 78 years of age, and works with each client individually to design a plan for success.

Barre Rev owner Kaelyn Adams recently took over the studio space from The Dailey Method and created Barre Rev. Kaelyn’s goal is to focus on alignment and safety, first and foremost, but bring in more creativity and allow the instructors to bring more originality and choreography through their individual personalities. With five separate formats, there is something for everyone.

Club Pilates

Club Pilates opened in 2018 in The Hadley building in downtown Mercer Island between Orangetheory Fitness and Freshy’s Local Market. Club Pilates began in San Diego and now has 315 locations across the US. According to its website, the studio philosophy is true to founder Joseph Pilates’ Reformer-based Contrology Method, “but modernized with group practice and expanded state-of-the-art equipment.”

Known as the “sport of fitness,” CrossFit is a competitive, highly varied exercise program that combines high-intensity interval training, weight lifting, plyometrics (jump training), body weight training (burpees, push-ups, rope climbing), cardio, and other exercises. Orangetheory Fitness offers 60-minute workout sessions split into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training with heart rate monitors to track intensity and maximize metabolic burn.
