A Mercer Island tradition, the Crest Learning Center annual Horticulture Plant Sale opens this Saturday for the first of three weekends. The sale will take place from 9 am to 3 pm on the following Saturdays – May 5th, May 19th, and June 2nd – in the greenhouses of the Crest Learning Center.
Students of the Crest Learning Center Horticulture program host the sale; they have also grown the plants, which include heirloom tomatoes and a variety of vegetables and flowers. The class taught by Kimberly Griggs, and the Horticulture program is described on the Mercer Island School District website as the following:
The Horticulture program is a career and college readiness course, a science lab, and a Crest course. Students maintain their own garden plot around the Crest Learning Center and produce their own crops for the annual plant sale. Every Spring, students grow vegetables, herbs, annual and perennial flowers that we sell in May – June to local gardeners. Additionally students learn the science behind horticulture in a variety of labs and group activities.
The Crest Learning Center is located at 4150 86th Ave SE. Learn more about sale and the Crest Learning Center Horticulture program on the Mercer Island School District website.
