Hundreds of Mercer Island women, men, and children turned out for the ‘Womxn’s March on Seattle‘ on Saturday, January 21st, joining an estimated 175,000 total participants.

Islanders Margaret Morency and Carrie Wernick Newman chartered three buses that carried approximately 50 people each from Northwood Elementary School to Judkins Park, the start location for the 3.6-mile march that ended at the Seattle Center. Newman said they had enough people to fill an additional bus, but weren’t able to charter a fourth one. Many others found their own way to the march by carpool, public transportation, and even walking across the floating bridge.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray and Governor Jay Inslee participated in the march, along with several of our own city officials: Deputy Mayor Debbie Bertlin; City Council members Wendy Weiker and Jeff Sanderson; and School Board member Tracy Drinkwater. State Representative and Mercer Island resident Tana Senn also participated in the march.

I felt fortunate to participate as well. As the writer and creator of this community blog, I’m eager to listen and engage in civic dialogue and conversations that are thoughtful, fair, and respectful. Additionally, as stated in our My MI Mission, we are dedicated to sharing local advocacy efforts, especially as they relate to our city, schools, and our relationship with the broader community.

If you haven’t had a chance yet to read the City Council’s 2017 State Legislative Priorities, now is a timely moment to do so (and get involved!). National politics aside, we can make the biggest difference at our local and state levels.
I invited Mercer Island march participants to send me their photos from the Seattle Women’s March. If you have a photo you’d like me to include, please send it my way: [email protected]
