The top 50 were chosen from an initial list of over 2,754 suburbs. Business Insider considered socioeconomic and crime data in its ranking, including education and income levels, unemployment and poverty rates, as well as commute times and housing affordability. (Here’s their ranking methodology.)
Mercer Island came out right in the middle of the list at #27, recognized for its short commutes, high income and education levels, and perfect school score (Great Schools: 10).
As described by Business Insider:
“Mercer Island is on the southern portion of Lake Washington, with Seattle to its west and Bellevue to its east. It connects to the mainland via bridges with interstates and has an average commute of about 22 minutes. Over 75% of its residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher and the median household income is $126,359.”
The full list ranged from the obscure – Johnston, Iowa – to the more widely known – Palo Alto, California, and Highland Park, Texas. Sammamish, a suburb of Bellevue, Washington, also made the list, ranked at #39.
