When my son was younger, he would frequently ask about two events throughout the year – “When is my birthday?” and “When is Circus?” Lucky for all kids everywhere, Circus is just around the corner.

The Mercer Island Preschool Association (MIPA) presents its 49th annual Circus event on Saturday, April 25th, from 10 am to 2 pm at the Mercer Island High School. A treasured Island tradition, MIPA’s Circus offers live music, entertainment, games, pony rides, food trucks, and more.

“We can’t wait to welcome local families to what promises to be an incredible event,” said Stephanie Wyss, Circus Co-Chair with Katie Penny Shea.

New this year, local kids’ indie band Recess Monkey will perform at 10:30 am.  The event will also feature circus acrobatic performances, roving entertainers, bouncy houses, carnival games, and pony rides.  Food truck options include Ezell’s Famous Fried Chicken, Veraci Pizza, Street Donuts and Dante’s Inferno Hot Dogs.

MIPA’s Circus began in 1966 as a Dr. Seuss-inspired carnival called “Circus McGurkus” for the children of Mercer Island. Since then, it has grown into a festival that attracts hundreds of families from all over Seattle and the Eastside.

Generations of Islanders may remember the Cardboard Box Maze. Absent for many years, this Circus favorite will return for this year’s event.

“I remember climbing through that maze when I was a kid,” said Island resident Becky McKanna. “I can’t wait for my own kids to experience it. We look forward to MIPA’s Circus every year.”

Circus is supported by many local organizations, including Mercer Island Pediatrics, Eva Nehring State Farm, GET Guaranteed Education Tuition, JayMarc Homes, and Swedish Medical.

“Giving back to the community we are a part of is one of JayMarc’s core values,” said Leslie Rousso, JayMarc Homes’ Director of Sponsorship/Philanthropy. “JayMarc Homes is a proud sponsor of the Mercer Island Preschool Association, and we look forward to sharing the Circus with local families.”

There is no cost to enter the event, however, tickets are sold to participate in games and activities. Activities are appropriate for kids ages 2 to 8.

MIPA is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization with a mission to improve the education and well being of children, ages birth to Kindergarten, on Mercer Island and in surrounding communities. Circus is MIPA’s largest annual fundraiser to support local social service organizations, parks, libraries, and provide preschool scholarships to families in need.
