Did you know that President Barack Obama’s mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, graduated from Mercer Island High School and became a renowned anthropologist? And she took her first anthropology class at the University of Washington?
The Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship Fund is holding its 6th annual scholarship award ceremony on May 1st from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Burke Museum on the University of Washington campus. This free event is open to the Mercer Island community and is co-hosted this year with the UW Department of Anthropology.
Our guest speaker is University of Hawaii librarian and archivist Bronwen Solyom who was a close friend of Dr. Dunham and compiled her papers for donation to the Smithsonian. Doors open at 6 pm, and we encourage you to come early to see the “Here and Now” exhibit of native artists, which includes the wood carving that inspired the Seahawks logo. Light Indonesian fare will be served.
The Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship Fund is a Mercer Island-based Scholarship organization, founded six years ago in honor of President Obama’s mother. Our $5000 scholarship is given annually to a graduating senior woman or women who have strong academic records and whose service work in the larger community shows a commitment to Dr. Dunham’s values of improving the lives of people – especially women – in marginalized communities around the world.
