Middle School Book Club

This book club is for middle school students who want to read books together, share books, and talk about books. Bring your own books to share. There will be treats, too! Please note: This will be taking place at the Islander Middle School Library!

Singing Circle with Panim Hadashot

Find your voice and joy at our weekly song sessions. SJCC is partnering with Panim Hadashot:New Faces and Rabbi Dov Gartenberg to bring their singing circle to the J. Game Night: Triangul8
Thursday, January 25, 6 – 7:30pm

Meet designer James Hutt and play a round or two of the fiendishly simple, endlessly replayable new game, Triangul8. Place the red triangle to start, then take turns placing triangles of your own color around it. Whoever captures the red triangle first wins. Easy, right? A game that’s both diversion and lifelong pursuit, a child can learn Triangul8 in five minutes, but a player can spend years trying to master it.

Please join MIHS’ Drama Department as they present their winter play, Good Kids, by Naomi Iizuka: Something happened to Chloe after that party last Saturday night. Something she says she can’t remember & everyone is talking about. Set at a midwestern high school, in a world of Facebook, Twitter & smartphones, Good Kids explores a traumatic sexual encounter and its very public aftermath.

Open Book Club: Harmony by Carolyn Parkhurst

In January, Island Books’ Open Book Club will read and discuss Harmony by Carolyn Parkhurst. How far will a mother go to save her family? Told from the alternating perspectives of both Alexandra and her younger daughter Iris (the book’s Nick Carraway), this is a unputdownable story about the strength of love, the bonds of family, and how you survive the unthinkable. Island Books’ open book club meets the last Thursday of every month. The staff facilitator chooses both fiction and nonfiction titles. All are welcome to attend, and if you purchase your book at the store, you’ll always get a 10% discount.

Classics on Film: Winter Series

This week’s film is Gigi (1958). The Mercer Island Arts Council, with support from The Mercer Island Sister City Association, presents the Classics on Film Series. Screenings begin with an introduction by film historian Lance Rhoades and end with a Q&A session. Free and open to the public, with refreshments provided courtesy of Aljoya. All films are presented with English subtitles unless otherwise indicated.


World Travels: China
Saturday, January 27, 1 – 2:30 pm

International scholar (and traveler) Lance Rhoades offers a look at China, past and present, as seen through his experiences teaching at universities in two of its largest cities: Beijing and Shanghai. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Mercer Island Library.


Pastrome Pop-up
