Elena Louise Richmond will be reading from her newest book Advancing the Retreat on July 16th. We will gather together for a reading at 6 pm. In this new novel, April March wants nothing more than to be left alone to putter in her garden, but her husband has joined the church across the street and April gets pulled into the schemes and secret of the congregation.

Cook the Book: “Ottolenghi Simple” Desserts

In this hands-on class, pastry chef Laurie Pfalzer teaches how to make delicious desserts from Yotam Ottolenghi’s new cookbook “Ottolenghi Simple” that are distinctly “Ottolenghi” but with minimum hassle and maximum joy. Known as the undisputed master of the multi-ingredient recipe, Ottolenghi’s new recipes are simple— most containing 10 ingredients or less, made in 30 minutes or less, and an easy joy to knock-out. Join the Mercer Island Arts Council, Mercer Island Parks & Recreation, and Seattle Shakespeare Company for productions of two of Shakespeare’s most recognizable plays – Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night. Find a spot in our open-seating amphitheater at Luther Burbank Park, and watch the Bard’s stories come to life in their originally intended setting. All performances are free and begin at 7 pm, with a special “doubleheader” performance of both plays beginning at 2 pm on Sunday, August 11.

Restoration Event

Homestead Park, 8100 SE 40th Street
Join EarthCorps and the City of Mercer Island as we work in Pioneer Park! The park is 113 acres of forested habitat, the largest forested park on Mercer Island. It is home to over 70 types of birds and 12 different mammals. It also offers the most extensive trail system on the island. You can also help restore the forested areas of Homestead Park. While Homestead is host to ball fields and playgrounds it is also home to around 2.5 acres of urban forest in need of rescue from invasive weeds!
Blast It: Rocket Fuel Reactions Science Workshop

If you want to launch a rocket into space, you need fuel. Become a rocket scientist and experiment with chemical reactions before designing and building a ready-to-launch rocket. This workshop is presented by KidsQuest Museum for ages 5 to 11. Limited space, first come first served.

Family Yoga

Whisk, simmer, flip, bake, and blend as we cook a Sunday dinner in the SJCC kitchen for homeless teens. A great family activity to help make a difference for homeless teens. Dinners are delivered to YouthCare, a Seattle organization working to get homeless teens off the streets and prepared for life.
