44th Annual MIVAL Jr Art Show
Monday, July 2 – Saturday, July 14, 9 am – 6 pm
Mercer Island Wells Fargo Bank, 3001 78th Ave SE
This fantastic event will once again showcase the amazing artistic talents of the young people on Mercer Island. All work will be on public display and cash prizes are awarded. The pieces will be on display at Wells Fargo Bank until July 14th, and the award ceremony will be during Summer Celebration.
Where’s Waldo? Community Event
Friday, July 6 – Tuesday, July 31
At participating locations on Mercer Island
Waldo, the iconic children’s book character, is back again this summer, and Island Books and other Mercer Island merchants are celebrating! Throughout the month of July, look for businesses on Mercer Island with the “Shop Local–Find Waldo” sticker on their windows. Hidden somewhere within them you’ll find a hidden Waldo or his friend Wenda. When you do, get your passport stamped for proof. Three stamps earn you a button and a discount coupon; a stamp from every participating business enters you in a drawing for the grand prize at the end of the month! Local institutions on the Waldo hunting trail include: Island Books, Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce, Banner Bank, Pagliacci Pizza, and Island Treats.
Summer Sidewalk Sale

Island Books needs to make room for new inventory, so they are hosting a Sidewalk Sale! Stop by and save on books, toys, cards, gifts, and more.
SAT Practice Test
Tuesday, July 10, 10 am – 2 pm
Mercer Island Library, 4400 88th Ave SE
Take a FREE full length SAT practice test offered by Revolution Prep. All practice exams include a detailed score report to help you determine the best plan of action to tackle standardize testing. In addition, each student can set up a free 30-minute review with Sharon Centala. During review sessions, Sharon will help students determine their strengths and weaknesses and develop a custom plan to help prepare for the official exam. Let’s Write a Song Workshop
Tuesday, July 10, 3 – 4 pm

Presented by Morgan Taylor, this event is for middle and high school students. This Grammy nominee guides you through a fun and accessible introduction into the art of songwriting. Discover how to brainstorm lyrical concepts and explore rhythm, cadence, and poetic rhyme structures. Witness the magic of pulling inspiration out of thin air, and then they will sing a song that they will write together.
Community Coffee Hour

Join Mercer Island Parks & Recreation for Community Coffee Hour every Wednesday and Friday! This is a free program for kids, teens, adults, seniors, and families. Enjoy a hot cup of coffee in a fun and engaging atmosphere with people from the community.

All Comers Track Meet

Join MIXC for the 4th annual MI All Comers Track Meet! This is an all ages community event put on by the MIHS Track & Field team and the MI Track & XC Booster Club. There have been upwards of 200 participants in past years, and although the preschool, elementary, and middle school age groups are the most popular, they will have participants in all age groups. The best part is you can put together your own family relays!
Enjoy dinner from a food truck, meet MIHS athletes from our state champion girls 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams, and be active with your family, friends, and neighbors. There is a $5 participation fee.

Too Much Noise! Meowing & Growling Musical Tales

Sound Storm Maker Workshop

Presented by KidsQuest Children’s Museum, this event is for ages 5 and older. Fascinated by weather and storms? Come learn how to make musical instruments out of recycled materials to emulate a rain storm and even thunder claps. Discover how a “lightning” circuit works and learn all about the science of thunderstorms. Registration is not required, but space is limited.
College Essay Writing Drop-In Writing Lab

Even if you could not attend the workshops in June, you can stop by the library in July (July 12 and 19) for feedback, tips, and writing help on your college essays. Mercer Island High School teachers and counselors will be on hand, as well as Collegewise staff.
Tabletop Thursdays

Drop by for an afternoon of board games, video games, playing pool or ping-pong, and hanging out. There’s a huge selection of games, and the staff is always up to taking on a new competitor. Games include: Codenames, Mission Red Planet, Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Connect 4, Monopoly, and more. Free for ages 7 – 14.

Shakespeare in the Park: The Merry Wives of Windsor
July 12 – 14 | Thursday & Friday, 7 – 9 pm, Saturday, 2 – 4 pm

Seattle Shakespeare Company will be performing free shows in Luther Burbank Park, family-friendly and open to the public! Bring a blanket or a chair and come watch an all-ages friendly performance of The Merry Wives of Windsor. In the sleepy suburb of Windsor, the knight John Falstaff hopes to score a pretty penny by seducing two of the town’s wealthy wives, Mistress Page and Mistress Ford. But it’s the women who know how to play the game better. They soon orchestrate a scheme to scam the scammer. This play is a warm-hearted and antic romp with some of Shakespeare’s most clever and comic characters.

Each year, Mercer Island citizens donate hundreds of hours of their time to maintain the community’s parks and open spaces: picking up litter, planting trees, cutting down ivy, painting over graffiti, or repairing trails.
28th Annual Mercer Island Summer Celebration – “Island Vibes”
Saturday, July 14, 10 am – 11 pm, & Sunday, July 15, 10 am – 5 pm
Mercerdale Park, 77th Avenue SE and SE 32nd Street
Mercer Island’s only community-wide festival draws crowds between 20,000 and 30,000 over the festival weekend. Held annually on the second full weekend in July and boasting a new theme each year, the festival consists of many events: a parade, car show, fireworks, children’s rides, art/craft vendors, food vendors, musical entertainment, Swedish Pancake Breakfast, and boat rides around the Island. Special activities this year include Sk8te the Rock 2018, Sand in the City sculptures, Meet Moana!, Dig & Create Sandbox, and much more.

Sk8te the Rock 2018
Sunday, July 15, 1 – 3 pm
Mercerdale Skate Park, 77th Avenue SE and SE 32nd Street
Mercer Island Parks & Recreation is partnering with Bellevue Parks & Recreation for their second annual skate event as a part of Summer Celebration! Contestants can choose from three age divisions and will have 60 seconds to skate their best run. Giveaways, demos, and prizes for winners of each age division. There will be guest appearances, music, and much more.
SJCC Service Event: Dinner at Our House
Sunday, July 15, 5 – 7 pm
SJCC, 3801 E Mercer Way
Whisk, simmer, flip, bake, and blend as SJCC cooks a Sunday dinner for homeless teens. This is a great family activity to help make a difference for homeless teens. Dinners are delivered to YouthCare, a Seattle organization working to get homeless teens off the streets and prepared for life. Registration is free, but space is limited, so RSVP early.
