Here’s our weekly round-up of events from June 18 – 24 on Mercer Island:

Australian Winemaker’s Dinner – Luke Marquis

Monday, June 18, 6:30 – 9:30 pm

Caruccio’s, 2441 76th Ave SE, Suite 100

Luke Marquis, now 22 years old, is the oldest child of Sarah and Sparky Marquis, founders of Mollydooker Winery. Luke himself will be coming all the way from Australia to Caruccio’s to host this Winemaker’s dinner. He will do the pouring of the beautiful wines that he made himself in his family’s vineyards. The chef for this elegant, wine-paired dinner is a local favorite, Chef Cody Castiglia. The menu includes Spring Vegetable Tartine, Hankerchief Pasta, Spring Greens and Strawberry Salad, Lamb Osso Buco, and a special Caruccio’s wine-infused dessert.

African Music & Dance Showcase

Tuesday, June 19, 2 – 3 pm

Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club, 4120 86th Ave SE

Presented by Gansango Dance Company, this family program is open to all ages. You won’t be able to resist dancing and enjoying yourself at this program! A talented group of musicians and dancers will entertain you with contemporary and traditional West African dance, drumming and songs.

Community Coffee Hour

Join Mercer Island Parks & Recreation for Community Coffee Hour every Wednesday and Friday! This is a free program for kids, teens, adults, seniors, and families. Enjoy a hot cup of coffee in a fun and engaging atmosphere with people from the community.

Storybook Corner with Sparkle!

Island Books’ regular Wednesday morning Storybook Corner goes glam with a visit from Sparkle Leigh, Seattle’s Premier Clownfish Mermaid! Sparkle will be reading stories of love and light, bravery and pride, and maybe even inspiring a dance party. They’ll be starting earlier than usual so we can have a full hour of fun.

A Midsummer Night in Europe with Rachel Linden

Double Exposure: Edward S. Curtis

Saturday, June 23, 2 – 3 pm

Mercer Island Library, 4400 88th Ave SE

This Seattle Art Museum exhibition, which runs from June 14 to September 9, 2018, presents a comprehensive collection of Edward S. Curtis’s magnificent portraits of Native Americans. Photographed during the turn of the last century, they now have an indelible place in the American consciousness, especially the works from the Pacific Northwest where he started his career.

This lecture by Tamara Moats will explore his life and work, and the key Northwest tribes he portrayed. Tamara Moats is a Seattle art historian, former curator of education at the UW Henry Art Gallery, and history teacher at the Bush School Upper School. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Mercer Island Library in partnership with the Mercer Island Historical Society.

Chef Sepehr Sadrzadeh and Kramer Cirineo ready to make a huge splash in the food scene of the greater Seattle area. This dinner will be a top-notch, 6-course experience with a wine pairing. You will be welcomed with Caruccio’s bubbly and appetizers. For your plated, sit-down dinner, the chefs will be using seasonal produce and modern technique to create a supremely delicious and somewhat whimsical experience. Juneteenth Celebration

On Sunday, June 24, in partnership with the City, One Mercer Island will be presenting the community’s first Juneteenth Celebration. Come join us for music, food, fun, and education! One MI meets to discuss issues of race, equity and access and has formed advocacy groups to raise awareness of cultural diversity on Mercer Island. Come to this community event and learn more about Juneteenth, the annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the USA.


Jim Bailey, Author of The End of Healing
