Music Mends Minds
Wednesday, March 20, 2 – 4 pm

Music is medicine for the mind, and the Music Mends Minds project aims to help manage cognitive impairments. Join the new “Mercer Island Band” at our monthly sing-a-long on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, at the Fellowship Hall of Covenant Shores, Mercer Island. This is a free service to the community, and we invite everyone to come make music with us! Anyone living with neurodegenerative diseases, along with your caregiver, are especially encouraged to attend. These musical support groups foster a community between the musicians and singers, as well as their families, friends, and caregivers, all of whom thrive on the socialization and music making. First Aid & CPR Class
Wednesday, March 20, 7 – 9 pm & Saturday, March 23, 9 – 2 pm
Main Fire Station, 3030 78th Ave SE

First Aid and CPR classes taught by Mercer Island Firefighters. This class is for infant, child, and adult CPR. The cost will be $75 per hour of instruction plus $22 per person for the certification cards.

Osher at the J: Toward Precision Medicine with Alzheimer’s Disease

At the UW Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, scientists seek to advance research in genetic risk, develop neuroimaging markers and biomarkers for early detection, and discover novel therapeutics that can be tailored to address the underlying molecular causes of an individual’s disease. This talk highlights the most recent advances in understanding risk and resilience in Alzheimer’s disease in order to improve the care, functioning, and quality of life of both patients and caregivers. The speaker is Dr. Suman Jayadev, neurologist and Director of the UW Neurogenetics Clinic.

Tabletop Thursdays

Drop by for an afternoon of board games, video games, playing pool or ping-pong, and hanging out. There’s a huge selection of games, and the staff is always up to taking on a new competitor. Games include: Codenames, Mission Red Planet, Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Connect 4, Monopoly, and more. Free for ages 7 – 14.

Orangetheory Fitness Two Year Anniversary

Classics on Film: King of Chess (Qi wang)

The Classics on Film series, sponsored by the Arts Council, celebrates the amazing variety of chess-themed cinema with the film, King of Chess. Film historian Lance Rhoades will introduce and lead a Q&A following the film. All screenings are free and open to the public. 


 

Restoration Event at Gallagher Hill Open Space
Saturday, March 23, 10 am – 2 pm
City Hall Parking Lot, 9611 SE 36th Street

Gallagher Hill is an 11 acre natural area that is part of Mercer Island’s open space system that includes 35 parks, 350 acres of open space and over 50 miles of trails. Volunteers recently worked to build a new trail through this open space that serves as an important connection between City Hall on SE 36th Street and residential areas along E Shorewood Drive, encouraging pedestrian access through the area and increasing walkability around the island. 


 

Musical Trip Around the World
Saturday, March 23, 2 – 3 pm

Learn songs from Latin America and Japan, presented by Miho and Diego! Discover some rare instruments from other countries and play along by clapping and stamping out rhythms. Ages 5 and older.


 

Dinner Church: Spaghetti & Youth Group Fundraiser
Saturday, March 23, 5 – 8 pm
Emmanuel Church, 4400 86th Ave SE

A unique way to do church! We will gather for a meal while also gathering for worship. There will be live music, great food, and an opportunity to support the youth mission trip through their silent auction! This is a great way to attend church on Saturday night if you are running the half marathon the next day! This should be fun for ALL ages. Newcomers welcome!

Mercer Island Rotary Half Marathon

Join thousands of competitive athletes, recreational runners, walkers and active families for the Spring kick-off event to Puget Sound’s running season!  There is a Half Marathon Run/Walk, 10k Run, 5k Run/Walk and 1/2 mile Kids’ Dash for those 10 years and younger. The event raises colon cancer awareness and funds colon cancer victim and family support as well as Rotary supported charities locally, regionally, and internationally.

Family Yoga with Rae Lowe

A family yoga class intended for kids ages 5-12 and their adult(s). Spend time with your family exploring yoga together! We’ll get in lots of movement and have fun learning about yoga poses. We will discover how our body and breath move together, and ways to bring calmness and relaxation to our day. Registration highly recommended. Please bring your own mats or beach towels for your children. Class fee is $20 for 1 adult & 1 child, $30 for 2 adults & 2 children, and an additional $5/child.
