Story Times at the Library

Join the Mercer Island Children’s Librarian for stories, songs, rhymes and fun in these 30-minute programs designed especially for you and your young child.

IdeaX: Explore Circuits!
Tuesday, March 7, 3:30 – 5:30 pm

Electrical circuits are the foundation of our technology-driven lives. Everything from simple light bulbs to complex devices like the iPhone depend on them. Stop by the meeting room to create circuits and explore electronics! Play around or work on a project. Bring a friend and work in pairs! Students grades 4 and up. Squishy Circuit and Snap Circuit kits provided. No registration. Sponsored by the Friends of the Mercer Island Library.

Kaleidoscope Play & Learn

Have fun singing songs, telling stories, reading books, creating art and playing. Kaleidoscope Play & Learn is in English. Ages 5 years and younger with caregiver. Sponsored by the Friends of the Mercer Island Library.


Mercer Gallery Exhibit featuring Eliza Brown & Lisa Strong
Artists’ Reception – Thursday, March 9, 6:30 – 8 pm
Exhibit runs February 24 – April 14
Mercer Island Community & Event Center, 8236 SE 24th St

The Mercer Gallery at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center features art work by regional artists. Presented by the Mercer Island Arts Council, the current exhibit features the work of Eliza Brown and Lisa Strong. The community is invited to an artists’ reception to take place this Thursday.


Youth Theatre Northwest presents TEXT
March 10 – 26 | Fridays & Saturdays, 7 pm; Sundays, 2 pm
Youth Theatre NW – Parish Hall Theatre, 4400 86th Ave SE

TEXT uses original scenes, music, and movement to present the lives of two different groups of friends. Some characters face universal trials like: stress, school dances, sexuality, and navigating the growing pangs of friendship. Others grapple with additional issues from depression to eating disorders. A moving and often humorous glimpse into the lives and hearts of teenagers told in their own authentic voices. TEXT is not merely a performance–it is a conversation that will last beyond the final curtain.


Classics on Film Winter Series
Friday, March 10, 7:30 – 9:30 pm
Aljoya – Theatre,  2430 76th Ave SE

This week’s film is the Random Harvest (1942). The Mercer Island Arts Council, with support from The Mercer Island Sister City Association, present the Classics on Film Series. Screenings begin with an introduction by film historian Lance Rhoades and end with a Q&A session. Free and open to the public, with refreshments provided courtesy of Aljoya. All films are presented with English subtitles unless otherwise indicated.



Restoration Event
Saturday, March 11, 10 am – 2 pm

Meet: South entrance of park on 90th Ave SE, north of SE 47th St

Each year, Mercer Island citizens donate hundreds of hours of their time to maintain the community’s parks and open spaces: picking up litter, planting trees, cutting down ivy, painting over graffiti, or repairing trails.


The Indigenous Art of Molas
Saturday, March 11, 10:30 – 11:30 am
Mercer Island Library, 4400 88th Ave SE

The Kuna (Guna) people of Isla San Blas create colorful textiles and clothing using bright satin fabric combining patterns of birds, sea life, flowers and insects. Create your own pattern using paper and craft materials. Registration begins February 25. Sponsored by the Friends of the Mercer Island Library. Family program, ages 3 and older welcome. Parents must attend with ages 3 to 7.


Parents’ Night Out!
Saturday, March 11, 5 – 10 pm
Mercer Island Community & Event Center, 8236 SE 24th St

Leave the kids with us – go get dinner, grab a movie, go shopping or enjoy some alone time…you deserve it! Your little minions will have a blast with our staff; eating pizza, watching a movie, doing arts and crafts and of course playing a TON of games. Must register seven days prior to course date. Registration is required.


Super Purim Carnival
Sunday, March 12
Stroum Jewish Community Center, 3801 East Mercer Way
Hamantashen Hustle Fun Run – 10 am

Join us for a Purim family run: the Hamantashen Hustle! Run, walk, or dance your way through this one-mile race. The whole family is welcome. Don’t forget to wear your costume! $30 per family (includes t-shirts)

Carnival – 11:30 am – 2 pm
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no . . . it’s Super Purim! Join us for our greatest Purim carnival yet. We’ll have tons of awesome carnival games, art activities, a bouncy house, rides, and so much more. Superhero costumes encouraged! Games this year include 9-hole mini golf, mechanical bull riding, life-sized Twister, and more. We’ll also have Falafel Salam and Yummy Box food trucks on site.


Mercer Island Junior Football Open House
Sunday, March 12, 6 – 8 pm
Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club, 4120 86th Ave SE

The Youth Mercer Island Football Board is hosting an open house for registration for the 2017 Tackle Football Season. Families and students in Grades 2nd through 8th are invited to attend.  This is a great opportunity to meet coaches, ask questions, and get answers.  Students can also weigh in with the MIHS captains and find out what team they will play on. $50 program fee discount for those in attendance of Open House.
