Join Mercer Island Parks & Recreation for Community Coffee Hour every Wednesday and Friday! This is a free program for kids, teens, adults, seniors, and families. Enjoy a hot cup of coffee in a fun and engaging atmosphere with people from the community.

Have fun singing songs, telling stories, reading books, creating art, and playing. Kaleidoscope Play & Learn is in English. Ages 5 years and younger with caregiver. Sponsored by the Friends of the Mercer Island Library.


Tabletop Thursdays
Thursday, May 25, 4 – 7 pm
Mercer Island Community & Event Center, 8236 SE 24th Street

Drop by for an afternoon of board games, video games, playing pool or ping-pong, and hanging out. The Community & Events Center has a huge selection of games, and the staff is always up to taking on a new competitor. Games include: Codenames, Mission Red Planet, Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Connect 4, Monopoly, and more. Free for ages 7 – 14.

Open Book Club: Before the Wind
With Special Guest Host, Author Jim Lynch

We’re excited to present a very special open book club in May. Our guest host, acclaimed Northwest author Jim Lynch, will moderate and discuss his latest novel just out in paperback, Before the Wind. A funny, big-hearted story about a gifted and volatile Seattle family, Before the Wind came out in April 2015. The book has been praised by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Seattle Times, and The Toronto Star. Open Book Club meets on the last Thursday of every month. All are welcome to attend, and if you purchase your book here in the store, you’ll get a 10% discount.

The Story Behind Citizen Kane

Although it is now widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made, the 1941 film Citizen Kane was not always seen as such. In this multi-media presentation and film screening sponsored by the Friends of the Mercer Island Library, film historian Lance Rhoades tells the story of how Citizen Kane was made, how it intertwined the reputations of Welles and newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst, and how history has come to call it a masterpiece.


Russian ’80s Discotech at SJCC
