Open Book Club: The Mothers by Brit Bennett

In May, our Open Book Club will read and discuss The Mothers by Brit Bennett. Set within a contemporary black community in Southern California, Brit Bennett’s first novel is an emotionally perceptive story about community, love, and ambition. Island Book’s open book club meets the last Thursday of every month. A staff facilitator chooses both fiction and nonfiction titles. All are welcome to attend, and if you purchase your book in the store, you’ll get a 10% discount.

“Vanitas” – Opening Reception

SZ Gallery will be featuring figurative oil paintings by Erin Milan in an exhibit called “Vanitas.” This series of paintings is titled after the Vanitas paintings by Dutch artists from the 17th Century, which contrasted luscious displays of food with symbols of death and decay, such as a rotting piece of fruit, a fly, or a skull. Each piece is a meditation on nourishment, desire, and the inevitability of loss. *Please note: Paintings include female nudity.* There will be complimentary refreshments and seasonal bites.
National Trails Day & First Day of Letterboxing

First Market of the season! The Mercer Island Farmers Market is open every Sunday from June – October. Say hello to your favorite vendors and kick the season off with us. Native Plant Garden Summer Showcase

Mercerdale Park Native Plant Garden, 3009 77th Ave SE
Come explore the results of restoration and replanting efforts in the Mercerdale Park Native Plant Garden (over 500 volunteer hours with City support). Guides will be available to introduce visitors to native plants. Watch for the resident Anna’s hummingbird. There will be bird stickers for kids and a free raffle for a handmade cedar birdhouse. Buy lunch at the Farmers Market then enjoy it on a shaded garden bench. There will be a tour especially for children and families at 1 pm led by junior naturalists.
