Island Books Open Book Club: Let’s Talk about Harper Lee
Thursday, August 27, 7:30 pm
Island Books, 3014 78th Ave SE
Island Book’s open book club meets the last Thursday of every month at 7:30pm. All are welcome to attend. This month we expect a particularly spirited discussion! Our August selection is Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman. Written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman imparts a new understanding of how the Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, To Kill a Mockingbird, came to be. It also forces us to reexamine our understanding of the original iconic characters. Much has been written in the media about this landmark publication, and now it’s time to add our own voices to the discussion. Did Harper Lee truly want this published? How did this original manuscript turn into To Kill a Mockingbird? Was it a mistake to release it? Does it harm her legacy? Whether you’re a regular at our book club or a first-timer, please join us for a community gathering in honor of the book of the moment and that other book, the one that has helped define American literature.
