Annual “Gathering of the Greens” Sustainability Program Update
Tuesday, September 11, 7 pm

The City of Mercer Island will be presenting an update on its sustainability plan at its annual “Gathering of the Greens” event, hosted by local environmental groups, including Sustainable Mercer Island and Mercer Island Ready for 100. The City’s Sustainability Manager will address various sustainability topics, including the City’s trial use of the STAR Community Rating system (to benchmark and measure progress on sustainability measures; local Climate Action plans, and ongoing work with the King County Cities Climate Collaboration (K4C); and recent sustainability initiatives, such as Solarize Mercer Island and the Bikeshare pilot program.
Community Coffee Hour

Join Mercer Island Parks & Recreation for Community Coffee Hour every Wednesday and Friday! This is a free program for kids, teens, adults, seniors, and families. Enjoy a hot cup of coffee in a fun and engaging atmosphere with people from the community.

Classics on Film: Fall Series

This week’s film is Knights of the South Bronx (Allen Hughes, 2005).
The Mercer Island Arts Council, with support from The Mercer Island Sister City Association, presents the Classics on Film Series. Screenings begin with an introduction by film historian Lance Rhoades and end with a Q&A session. This season’s film series is “chess-themed cinema.” All film screenings are free and open to the public, with refreshments provided courtesy of Aljoya. All films are presented with English subtitles unless otherwise indicated.

Each year, Mercer Island citizens donate hundreds of hours of their time to maintain the community’s parks and open spaces: picking up litter, planting trees, cutting down ivy, painting over graffiti, or repairing trails.
IdeaX: Stop Motion Animation
Saturday, September 15, 1 – 3 pm

Who doesn’t love Stop Motion Animation? Learn how to create your own video with an app, clay and Legos. Move objects in simple increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a fast sequence. This is a drop-in class, no registration needed.
PJ Story Time with Simon Okelo and Nancy Stewart

This month’s storyteller is Simon Okelo. Raised in the slums of Manyatta in Kisumu, Simon discovered his own potential in art and music. Simon is the Founder & Executive Director of One Vibe, a Seattle-based nonprofit that supports Kenyan youth through art and music programs.
Geared especially for children ages 3 and up; Nancy Stewart will be the musical guest! Refreshments will be served.
