Create and Record Sound Effects for Movies Tech Workshop
Tuesday, August 15, 1 – 2:30 pm
Mercer Island Library, 4400 88th Ave SE

For ages 12 – 18, this workshop is presented by STYLE (Songwriting Through Youth Literature Education) and sponsored by the Friends of the Mercer Island Library. STYLE will introduce Foley, an art form used to create sound effects, soundtracks, and other dialogue from characters. They’ll get the opportunity to create their own sound effects to an already existing work. Instruments, scripts, and tools will be provided, and the performance will be recorded for students. Please register online or call the library.

Movie Night at Island Books
Tuesday, August 15, 6:30 – 8 pm
Island Books, 3014 78th Ave SE

Island Books will be screening a movie that’ll be decided on by the audience! If you’re a fan of film adaptations of books, you’ll definitely enjoy this movie night.

Community Coffee Hour
Wednesday, August 16 & Friday, August 18, 9 – 10 am

Join Mercer Island Parks & Recreation for Community Coffee Hour every Wednesday and Friday! This is a free program for kids, teens, adults, seniors, and families. Enjoy a hot cup of coffee in a fun and engaging atmosphere with people from the community.

Congressman Adam Smith: Constituent Services Outreach
Wednesday, August 16, 11 am – 1 pm

Congressman Adam Smith’s office will be hosting mobile office hours to make their services more convenient and accessible to you. His staff members are able to assist constituents with Federal Agency issues such as Social Security, Internal Revenue Service, and State Department. They can also provide housing and financial support resources and help with federal grants.

Youth Theatre Northwest presents Go, Dog, Go! 
Wednesdays – Saturdays | 7:30 pm

P.D. Eastman’s classic children’s book comes to life on stage through physical comedy, silly dances, music, and great energy.  Just like the book, this play has the ability to generate fun, learning, adventure, and surprise with a minimum of text. Go, Dog, Go! honors the joyous simplicity of the world around us and never stops from the moment it starts.

Tabletop Thursdays

Drop by for an afternoon of board games, video games, playing pool or ping-pong, and hanging out. There’s a huge selection of games, and the staff is always up to taking on a new competitor. Games include: Codenames, Mission Red Planet, Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Connect 4, Monopoly, and more. Free for ages 7 – 14.

Mostly Music in the Park

Mostly Music in the Park is Mercer Island Arts Council’s annual summer concert series in Mercerdale Park.  Concerts feature various bands and artists from around the region performing a wide variety of music. This week’s featured group is Evening Bell, an Americana-style band!

Shabbat Dinners in the Garden

In partnership with Temple De Hirsch Sinai, come to the J’s beautiful Kesher Garden for Shabbat, songs, s’mores, and togetherness! You can purchase your meal at a food truck at the J’s shuk open air market. Then bring a blanket and find a cozy spot in our garden, joining other families for a meaningful and fun night filled with Shabbat joy. We will top off the night with s’mores! The event is free, but please RSVP.

No Sugar Challenge: Naturally Sweet with a NSM Nutritionist

Concert in the Park

The Russian Chamber Music Foundation of Seattle and Mercer Island Arts Council presents Concert in the Park! This free, outdoor concert will feature wonderful pieces by Beethoven, Chopin, Kapustin, Rachmaninoff, and more. Come and bring a lunch or snacks and listen to great classical music performed by young talents, Seattle Symphony musicians, pianists, and Artistic Director of the Russian Chamber Music Foundation of Seattle, Natalya Ageyeva. This concert will be narrated by fabulous Lisa Bergman from Classical King FM 98.1.

Movies in the Park: Finding Dory

Sponsored by Mercer Island FC, come watch FREE family movies on a giant inflatable screen in Mercerdale Park. This week’s movie is Finding Dory. Please bring blankets, lawn chairs, and flashlights. Movies are cancelled during inclement weather, so please call the Mercer Island Community & Event Center at 206-275-7609 to confirm showings on bad weather days. Fun activities and crafts related to the movie will begin an hour before show time. Refreshments sold on site.

SJCC Service Event: Dinner at Our House
Sunday, August 20, 5 – 7 pm
SJCC, 3801 E Mercer Way

Do you like to cook? How about helping those in need? SJCC is partnering with YouthCare, an organization working to fight homelessness among Seattle teens, to cook dinners in the SJCC kitchen. Dinner will then be delivered to YouthCare’s Jackson Street facility to be served that evening.
